Screen Addiction

Screen Addiction is an over-dependence on digital devices, similar to substance addictions such as alcohol or drugs. It refers to excessive technology use, including TV, video games, social media, and smartphone apps, that negatively impacts one’s physical health, relationships, and mental well-being.

Types of Screen Addiction

  1. Gaming Addiction: Games offer rewards, levels, and social elements that can create a powerful, dopamine-driven loop of pleasure. Games like Fortnite, League of Legends, and others can lead to addiction, especially when linked with gambling or competitive online gaming.
  2. Social Media Addiction: Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube can lead to a compulsive need for engagement, often causing individuals to lose time to endless scrolling or binge-watching. It can foster isolation, self-esteem issues, and even mental health conditions like body dysmorphia.
  3. Online Gambling Addiction: Gambling in digital formats (e.g., online casinos, eSports betting) can lead to a dual addiction of both gambling and excessive screen time, contributing to high-risk behaviors like financial problems and severe mental health risks.
  4. Pornography Addiction: Often associated with emotional dependency, excessive online porn use can harm real-life relationships and lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and loneliness.
  5. Online Shopping Addiction: Also known as compulsive buying disorder, online shopping addiction is driven by the thrill of browsing and purchasing, serving as an emotional escape or pleasure boost.
  6. Work-Related Digital Addiction: People who are over-reliant on work emails or other job-related digital tasks outside of work hours can develop an unhealthy work-life balance, leading to stress, relationship strain, and burnout.

Signs and Symptoms of Screen Addiction

  • Lack of Interest in Other Activities: Preferring screens over physical activities or hobbies.
  • Screens as a Mood-Booster: Turning to digital devices for comfort or mood enhancement.
  • Secretive Usage: Using devices secretly, often at inappropriate times (e.g., late at night).
  • Interference with Relationships: Strained relationships due to excessive screen time.
  • Withdrawal Symptoms: Strong emotional reactions when screens are taken away.

Treatment Approaches for Screen Addiction

  1. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps individuals identify negative thinking patterns and develop healthier coping mechanisms, making it effective for those using screens to escape difficult emotions.
  2. Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET): Aims to resolve ambivalence and encourage change, often used in conjunction with CBT. Through motivational interviewing, patients explore their emotional triggers and work to reduce compulsive technology use.
  3. Exposure Therapy: Involves gradually reducing screen time in a controlled environment to diminish compulsive behavior and help the individual manage screen-related anxiety.

Self-Care and Coping Strategies

Beyond therapy, adopting healthy routines, setting screen-time limits, and engaging in offline activities can help manage screen addiction. Finding balance is key, as well as seeking support from family or friends when working towards healthier screen habits.
